There are dozens of strategy formulas out there… meant to help, but often confusing.
Which raises the question: Can a formula help me in reaching more people, meaningfully? After all, contexts vary, and so do challenges.
Sometimes there’s tension between your broader organisational strategy and what you want to scale, causing friction, wasted resources, mismatched solutions, and unnecessary stress.
So, we simplified what a good scale strategy formula should include, helping you reduce friction and focus your efforts where it matters most.
We’ve even built tools to help you craft your own. By the end of this email, you’ll have all you need to start immediately.
Here’s a good formula, filled in👇

It clearly lays out AA’s goals and how they plan to achieve them (their strategy).
And here it is empty (download it here):

It prompts questions, such as: ‘Who will deliver my solution?’ and ‘Who will pay for it?’ Spend time on each to get clear, but the goal is clarity, not rigidity. Keep it flexible.
The free tools to help you find answers:
- Your problem definition
- Your intended impact
- Your doer and payer at scale
- Your pathway that will get you there
- The tradeoffs you’re willing to make in pursuit of your strategy (in this guide, you’ll find the tradeoffs next to each pathway)
Two important reminders: 🚨
- Keep it high-level; don’t get lost in details
- Adapt the formula freely to your needs
